How to Create a Natural Outdoor Play Space at Home

Did your parents ever say “fresh air is good for you?” Well it turns out our parents were right!

Creating a natural outdoor play space in your backyard is easy if you have access to natural materials, which most of us do. According to LetTheChildrenPlay.net, elements to include in your natural outdoor play space should include:
  • Water
  • Vegetation
  • Animals
  • Insects
  • Sand
  • Natural Color
  • Places to sit on, in, under, lean against, provide privacy, shade or shelter
  • Different levels, nooks, crannies, places to hide
  • Structures or objects that can be changed, including lots of loose parts
The outdoors is richer in sensory experiences than are indoor environments. Very young children learn predominately through their sensory and physical experiences, and that learning supports brain development. Children who have nature experiences demonstrate more advanced cognitive development by improving awareness, reasoning, and observational skills.

At Little Angels Preschool & Daycare in Ypsilanti we focus on growing the WHOLE child, not just academically, but also their character and well-being. Studies have shown that being outdoors is great for your child’s intelligence and their character, as well as their physical and mental health. Little Angels is dedicated to spending much of your child’s day exploring nature. We feel that it’s the best and most effective way for children to learn and grow. Allow children to experiment with the sounds each bowl, hose, and pipe make when you dip them in and out of water while tapping on them with chopsticks. Repeat!

Watch the water and music play video here for a demonstration!

This might seem like just a fun playtime activity, but you’re really helping your child to be set up for success. Want your child to be the next Beethoven? The earlier music is taught the earlier your child can fine tune his or her craft! This water and music activity develops both their small and gross motor skills which could help better their mobility. Also, this music activity is a great way for your child to learn math and science skills.

Shape Matchup Activity!

Want to set your child up for success by teaching him or her all about shapes?

Can your child already recognize certain shapes because of everyday items found around your house?

Is your child aware of different size objects around your home?

We recommend a great activity to practice shapes and sizes by Trish Kuffner, found on FamilyEducation.com:

Materials
  • Colored construction paper
  • White construction paper
  • Pen or marker
  • Scissors
Directions
  1. Cut basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, heart, and so on) out of colored construction paper.
  2. Trace all the shapes onto a piece of white construction paper.
  3. Have your child match the colored shapes to those drawn on the white paper.
This might seem like just a fun playtime activity, but you’re really helping your child to be set up for success. Want your child to be the next great mathematician? Baby Talk or No Baby Talk That is Thee Question!

Yay or nay for baby talk?

Do you believe that imitating your babies babbling can be beneficial to your child’s vocabulary growth?

Or, do you think that speaking in a regular tone rather than a sing-song voice would be just as beneficial for your child, and that’s why you don’t baby talk?
Preschool Ypsilanti

According to PBS Parents, “Experts call this musical way of talking “parentese” and report there’s a true value to it. Parentese helps parents and caregivers connect to their babies and helps babies develop language skills.” If it can help benefit your child in the long run, why not try speaking baby talk every now and then. It couldn’t hurt!

With baby talk every child is exposed to drawn out vowels and exaggerated facial expressions, which allow a baby’s brain to remember the sounds they hear to help better recognize language. Before you know it, your baby will be rolling out sentences and performing in the school play!

Has baby talk worked for your children? Why are you for or against baby talk? Let’s start the conversation on our blog in the comment section.

13 Tips to Help Your Child Eat Their Veggies at Home & at Their Preschool in Ypsilanti

Children go through phases of what they will or will not eat, this is normal. We know as parents that we want our children to have a diverse palate and nutritious meals.

Our teachers at preschool in Ypsilanti suggest the best thing to do is not force your child to eat veggies, but make it a fun experience!

According to WebMD, a few proven ways to get kids to eat more veggies include:
  1. Take your child to a farmers market and have them pick a veggie.
  2. Try to offer a selection of different foods for salad night, taco night or pizza night.
  3. Make it fun by making faces with cut up veggies.
  4. Avoid battling over veggies.
  5. Offer new veggies with a familiar one.
  6. Don’t give up! Children’s appetites change over time.
  7. Make veggie popsicles and smoothies.
  8. Take advantage of peer pressure. If their friend is bold enough to try veggies, your child may follow.
  9. Try roasting veggies! It helps bring out their natural sweetness.
  10. Serve veggies with dip!
  11. Have veggies ready to eat as a go-to snack.
  12. Set a good example! Make sure your child sees you eat your own veggies. They will be more likely to do the same.
  13. Sneak veggies into baked goods.

If you decide to try some of these tips to help your child eat more veggies, we’d like to know if it was successful. Imagine clean plates and no complaints at dinner time! We hope that your child becomes more adventurous in their eating habits, as well as, a better health role model for the future.

Why Does My Child Lie?

Does your child tell lies?

Are you wondering why?

Do you worry that your child may be developing a lying problem?

No need to worry! Telling lies is completely normal stage for children. Most of us did it at one point or another, but it’s important not to let the telling of lies get out of hand. Instead, imagine what your life would be like if you had a steady flow of truthful communication between you and your child?

If you and your child were able to speak openly about everything, there would be a lot less opportunity for lying. Trust is the KEY!
According to Parenting.com, here’s why certain ages groups tell lies:

Toddlers: Telling small fibs is common for ages 2-3. These are often fibs “denying they’ve done something wrong or in order to gain something for themselves.”

Preschoolers: “This is the age of invisible friends, horned monsters and talking rainbows. Preschoolers who tell tall tales can be pure play, or sometimes wishful thinking, usually insisting their fantasy world is real.”

Schoolkids: When 5 – 8 year-olds lie, it usually “benefits someone else or is told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.”

Tweens: Tweens (ages 9 – 12) tend to be a little bit secretive but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. It usually means they’re maturing and wish for more independence.

How Should I Handle My Child’s Lies?

The best way to help wean your child from lying is to encourage them to express themselves truthfully. Building a relationship is critical, because without a trusting relationship, getting to know one another can become difficult.

Don’t be afraid to open up your feelings to your child and tell them how you feel when they lie. Do you feel angry? Are you filled with disappointment? Are you sad? This can help open up a dialogue and hopefully get your child to open up as well, if you handle it calmly and with love.

If you decide to try some of these things with your child, we’d like to know how they work for you. In addition, are there any other alternatives that already work for you that you’d like to suggest to other parents? Please let us know in the comments! At Little Angels Preschool in Ypsilanti serving Saline, Ann Arbor, Milan, and the surrounding areas, we’re dedicated to our students’ health and well-being.

Preschool in Ypsilanti Encourages the Importance of Outdoor Play

Does your child like to go outside and play?

Is your child’s development improving happening at a pace you’re happy with?

Does your child appreciate nature and what it has to offer?

There are many benefits to playing outdoors, but some kids don’t take full advantage of them. According to Early Head Start National Resource Center, reasons why children don’t go outside can be attributed to “adult fears about crime and safety; increased use of television, computer games, DVDs, and other digital media; more time spent indoors in structured activities; childcare arrangements with limited free time; and loss of natural habitats.”

Does any of this sound familiar? You’re not alone. Many parents struggle to find chances for their children to run free, sometimes because of fear of bumps, bruises, and scrapes. It may be hard to believe, but those bumps, bruises, and scrapes they get in nature, help them develop mentally, physically, and emotionally!

According to the Early Head Start National Resource Center, outside play has many benefits including:

  1. Helps improve overall fitness level
  2. Builds stronger immune systems
  3. Helps absorb Vitamin D for healthy bones and teeth
  4. Helps regulate and balance sleep patterns
  5. Helps protects against life stresses
  6. Increases creativity and imagination
  7. Enhances opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and collaborate with peers
  8. Improves awareness, reasoning, and observation skills
  9. Strengthens ability to focus and pay attention
  10. Helps children learn about nature, life cycles, and how plants and animals depend on each other for survival
At Little Angels Preschool & Daycare in Ypsilanti, we focus on growing the WHOLE child, not just academically, but also their character and well-being. We’re dedicated to helping your child spend much of their day exploring nature. We feel that it’s the best and most effective way for children to learn and grow.

What Every Parent Wants To Know: How Do You Tame Tantrums?

“Mommy I want this. Can I have it?” says the child.

“No darling. We have food at home,” says the Mother.

“BUT I WANT IT! WAHH!” says the flustered child.

Has your child ever had a meltdown in public? What did you do? How did you handle it?

Most of us can say, “I’ve been there!” It can be a frustrating stage in your and your child’s life because everything is just a little bit (or a lot) harder. But, trust us when we say they’ll grow out of it!

Every child is different, but their reactions to how you handle each situation can be the same. No tantrum lasts forever, but it may seem like it will. One important reason that children have tantrums is because they are trying to tell you something but don’t have the vocabulary to communicate their feelings.
daycare or preschool in Ypsilanti

According to Parent Magazine, there are ten tantrum fixes that both parenting experts and other moms swear by. They include:

  1. Ignore your child – This may sound mean, but emotions are taking over -- overriding the frontal cortex of the brain, the area that makes decisions and judgments. Your child will eventually cool down on his or her own.
  2. Know which kind of tantrum your child is having (meltdown, dramatic, public) – This will help you identify which way to respond.
  3. Give your child space – This allows your child to get their feelings out, pull themselves together and regain self-control.
  4. Create a diversion – This will allow the child to forget about the tantrum they’re having almost instantaneously.
  5. Discipline without spanking – This allows you to show your child that there are natural consequences to certain behaviors.
  6. Find out what’s frustrating your child – This is when sign language will come in handy! Or you can ask your child to point to something they want.
  7. Give your child a firm hug – Hugs make kids feel secure and let them know that you care about them.
  8. Offer Food or Rest – If your child’s tantrums usually occur before lunch, before naptime, and in the early evening, they are probably caused by hunger or fatigue.
  9. Incentive to behave – The key is to give an incentive to your child before the tantrum happens. That way if you feel one coming on, you can gently remind him or her about the "treat" you discussed.
  10. Speak calmly – Keep your cool during a child's tantrum. Otherwise, you may into a power struggle.

We’re sure there are many other ways you can handle your child’s temper tantrums, but these are ways other mothers swear by. We hope these tips will help you and your child communicate better and ease the number of tantrums.

Have you found a technique that gets your child to calm down?  We’d love to hear from you, please share with us in the comments!

What Does Your Child’s Plate Size Have to Do With Obesity?

Do you force your child to clean their plate at dinnertime?

Does your child eat more than one serving?

What size plate do you serve with at dinner?

All of these things can play a role in overeating. According to research, “one in three U.S. kids is now defined as overweight or obese.”  One way to solve this issue may be portion control!

You may ask, “How can I control my child’s portions?” According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the following steps will make it easier to minimize the extra calorie intake that you might not have noticed otherwise, including:
Daycare Ypsilanti

  1. Offering the proper “serving” to each member of your family, and then putting the extra food away. You’ll then have leftovers for another meal.

  2. Skipping the appetizers and splitting a large salad or main dish with one of your family members when dining out.

  3. Ordering a small pizza instead of a medium pizza will make it easier for your family to avoid overeating because the pieces are usually smaller.

  4. Watching movies at home or the theater while having a snack can distract you from noticing what you’re putting in your mouth and when. At the movies, share a box of popcorn, and avoid the free-refill tubs … and skip the candy!

  5. Eating straight from the bag or box is never a good idea. Measure out snacks, including fruits and veggies, into appropriate portion sizes before giving them to your kids.
Obesity can lead to many health problems, such as heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. If you make a change in your child’s eating habits early on in life, your child may end up living a longer and healthier life!

We hope this information will help you become more aware of the portions your child is eating at home and while dining out in the Ypsilanti area. At Little Angels Preschool & Daycare Ypsilanti, we’re dedicated to our students’ health and well-being. We want to ensure the safety of our students and their families.
